🦃 Turkey Subspecies – The Original Grand Slam

Eastern Wild Turkey

Range: Eastern United States, from Maine to northern Florida and west to the edge of the Great Plains.

The most widespread and numerous of all turkey subspecies, the Eastern Wild Turkey is considered the gold standard. These birds are known for their impressive size, with mature gobblers often weighing 20+ pounds. Their distinctive beard and spurs, combined with their wariness and intelligence, make them a challenging and rewarding quarry. Found in hardwood forests and agricultural areas, they respond well to calling during spring season.

Rio Grande Wild Turkey

Range: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Mexico.

Adapted to the arid landscapes of the Southwest, Rio Grande turkeys are hardy birds that thrive in open country with scattered trees. They’re known for their lighter coloration and longer legs compared to Eastern birds. These turkeys often roost in cottonwoods along creek bottoms and feed in open grasslands. Their habitat preferences and behavior patterns require different hunting strategies, often involving more spot-and-stalk techniques.

Merriam’s Wild Turkey

Range: Mountainous regions of the western United States, including Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and parts of surrounding states.

Named after naturalist Clinton Hart Merriam, these high-altitude specialists are distinguished by their white-tipped tail feathers and rump patch. Living in ponderosa pine forests and mountain meadows at elevations up to 10,000 feet, Merriam’s turkeys present unique challenges with their nomadic tendencies and preference for steep, rugged terrain. Their seasonal movements between winter and summer ranges require hunters to understand mountain ecology and weather patterns.

Osceola Wild Turkey (Florida)

Range: Central and southern Florida peninsula.

The smallest and most geographically restricted turkey subspecies, Osceolas are found only in Florida’s unique ecosystem of palmetto flats, cypress swamps, and oak hammocks. Named after the famous Seminole chief, these birds are darker overall with less iridescent plumage. The challenging hunting conditions in Florida’s dense, often wet terrain, combined with the bird’s limited range, make the Osceola the most difficult bird to complete a Turkey Grand Slam. Many consider it the crown jewel of turkey hunting.

🦌 Elk Subspecies – The Ultimate Big Game Grand Slam

Roosevelt Elk

Range: Pacific Northwest coastal regions of Oregon, Washington, northern California, and British Columbia.

The largest of all elk subspecies, Roosevelt elk are true giants of the temperate rainforest. Bulls can exceed 1,100 pounds and sport massive, often non-typical antlers. These coastal elk live in some of North America’s most challenging hunting terrain – dense, moss-covered old-growth forests with limited visibility. The persistent rain, thick undergrowth, and the elk’s tendency to remain in heavy cover make Roosevelt elk hunting an ultimate test of woodsmanship and persistence.

Rocky Mountain Elk

Range: Mountain regions throughout the western United States and Canada, including Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Alberta.

The most widespread and huntable elk subspecies, Rocky Mountain elk inhabit high-altitude forests, alpine meadows, and mountain parks. These elk are known for their lighter coloration and classic, symmetrical antler conformation. The dramatic landscapes they call home – from aspen groves to spruce-fir forests above timberline – provide hunters with some of the most scenic and challenging hunting experiences in North America. Their bugling during the September rut is one of nature’s most stirring sounds.

Tule Elk

Range: California’s Central Valley and coastal ranges – the most restricted range of any elk subspecies.

California’s native elk, the Tule elk represents one of conservation’s greatest success stories, having been brought back from near extinction to several thousand animals today. These smaller, pale-colored elk are adapted to California’s Mediterranean climate and grassland habitats. With extremely limited hunting opportunities and a handful of available tags through lottery systems, a Tule elk harvest represents the rarest trophy in North American hunting. Their distinctive pale coloration and smaller stature make them immediately recognizable.

Manitoba Elk

Range: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and parts of Ontario, Canada.

The northernmost elk subspecies, Manitoba elk are adapted to the boreal forest and parkland regions of central Canada. These elk are characterized by their darker coloration and robust build, developed for surviving harsh prairie winters. Hunting them requires understanding their patterns in the vast expanses of the Canadian wilderness, often involving long-range glassing and shots across agricultural fields and forest edges. The logistics of hunting in remote Canadian locations, combined with weather challenges, make Manitoba elk a true adventure for serious collectors.
